And Hamish at work.

HAMISH was born in the “Jacaranda City” of Pretoria in South Africa in 1937.

His earliest experience with Art was at the Vereeniging Technikon in the then Transvaal, run at the time by a Mrs Prentice who promoted his obvious talent in her art class.  It was at this time that Hamish came into contact with and was taught by Claude van Lingen who went on to become a famous and internationally recognised Artist.  Hamish then continued his studies to qualify with a National Diploma in Design Engineering.

At 18 years of age, Hamish became Chairman of the Vereeniging Art Society which at that time had the largest membership of any existing Art Society in the country.

The Langton & Littlejohn Art Gallery situated on the banks of the famous Vaal River arranged for him to study 'technique'  under one of South Africa’s most popular Artists i.e.. Errol Boyley who had a profound effect on Hamish and his style and in the execution of his work.

Due to his career in Engineering, Hamish transferred from the Transvaal down to Cape Town to the Chrysler Car Corporation.   Later he started his own printing company and gained a knowledge of reproduction and Silkscreen printing, working with another famous South African Artist by the name of James Thackeray.

Living in Cape Town for most of his life he spent a lot of time sailing, fishing and studying the magnificent wild ocean around the Cape of Good Hope.   One of his large seascapes graces the boardroom of the Somerset Hospital on the Foreshore of Cape Town.  Hamish is also well known in the Property Industry in the Western Cape,  appointed as Sworn Appraiser and was a Member of the Council of Value's as well as serving as Provincial Chief of  the Caledonian Society in the Cape Province.

Mostly self-taught, Hamish had the honour of spending valuable time working and exhibiting with a number of well-known Artists in the Western Cape, all of whom influenced him and placed him on the road to success.

Hamish has worked professionally since 1987, successfully participating in private exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg as well as exhibiting at the well-known Cape Gallery, Sun Gallery and in the Franshoek and Paarl areas of the Western Cape.

More recently, his work has been shown in Cheltenham, Cirencester, Burford, Wantage, Oxford, Winchcombe and at the Safari Club International Show in Las Vegas, U.S.A.    His work has also been purchased by buyers from New York to Hong Kong, recently had four of his paintings were added to a Private British Royal Collection.

Married with three daughters, Hamish is now based in the Cotswolds where he works from his studio at Winchcombe High Street.
